The New York Yankees are slowly starting to get their offensive production back from the injured list, including shortstop Didi Gregorius this weekend in Cleveland. Despite that, they have struggled in the first two games against the Indians at Progressive Field, and they are starting to take a shot to their pitching staff. That now includes their ace so far this season, as the Yankees placed Domingo German on the injured list Sunday morning with a left hip flexor strain. This move comes just two days after German struggled in their series opening 5-2 loss to the Indians on Friday night. It was his third consecutive tough start.
Despite his rough outings as of late, German still leads Major League Baseball with nine victories on the season, but has an ERA of 8.59 in his past three starts. It is not known if this is an injury that he's been dealing with recently, or if he suffered the injury on Friday, but he allowed four runs over six innings in the most recent loss.
German has been the surprise of the season for the Yankees, helping them overcome a slow start and numerous injuries to get back to first place in the AL East Division. In 13 games, including 12 starts, he is 9-2 with a 3.86 ERA, tied with the Houston Astros' Justin Verlander and Los Angeles Dodgers' Hyun-Jin Ryu for the most wins in baseball. The 26-year-old joins fellow starters James Paxton and Luis Severino on the injured list, while New York also lost Masahiro Tanaka for Sunday's start in Cleveland after placing him on the paternity list.
