The New York Yankees continued to add much-needed help to their starting rotation with a third trade in the past week on Monday. The Yankees acquired pitcher Lance Lynn from the Minnesota Twins for minor league players Tyler Austin and Luis Rijo. The Yankees also received cash considerations in this trade, which was their second one for a starter, as they added J.A. Happ from the Toronto Blue Jays last week. Happ won his Yankees' debut on Sunday afternoon.
Lynn spent six years of his career with the St. Louis Cardinals, which included a World Series victory as a rookie in 2011. He signed a one-year, $12 million deal to join the Minnesota Twins last off-season, and has gone 7-8 with a 5.10 ERA. While with the Cardinals, Lynn underwent Tommy John Surgery in 2016, causing him to miss the entire season. He would return in 2017 to make a National League-leading 33 starts that year.
Lynn also joins Zach Britton as the Yankees' recent additions to their pitching staff, as Britton joined in a deal with the Baltimore Orioles last Tuesday.
So, who did the Yankees cut ties with? Well, Austin did make the Opening Day roster, but was sent down after hitting just .223 with six doubles, eight home runs, and 23 RBI in 34 games. Since that demotion, the first baseman has hit .247 with five home runs and 11 RBIs. Meanwhile, the 19-year-old Rijo was an undrafted free agent in 2015, and went 4-1 with a 2.77 ERA in seven appearances this season.
Lynn's top season came in 2012, just his second year in the league, when he went 18-7 with a 3.78 ERA. That began his current run of five straight years with double digit victories, including consecutive 15-win seasons in 2013 and 2014. Lynn is expected to make his Yankees debut this week, as New York has a short, two-game series with the Baltimore Orioles beginning Tuesday, before battling the Boston Red Sox this weekend.
