The sixth-ranked Wisconsin Badgers have been known to cruise through the early part of their schedule, before falling off late in the season once the ranked competition comes their way. This year was different for them, and not in a good way, as the Badgers fell to the unranked BYU Cougars at home, 24-14, on Saturday afternoon. The loss snaps Wisconsin's 26-game win streak against unranked opponents, which was the longest current streak in the country.
Squally Canada ran for 118 yards and two touchdowns, helping BYU hand Wisconsin their first nonconference home loss since 2003. Meanwhile, the Cougars earned their first win over a top-10 team since beating No. 3 Oklahoma, 14-13, in 2009. They used multiple trick plays to keep the Badgers off-balanced, including a reverse that saw wide receiver Aleva Hifo complete a 31-yard touchdown pass to tight end Moroni Laulu-Pututau in the second quarter.
BYU would take the lead for good in the fourth quarter on Skyler Southam's 45-yard field goal with 9:58 to play. That was set up by a 46-yard run from Canada and broke a 21-21 tie at the time.
They would complete the upset by shutting down the Badgers offense in the fourth quarter, improving to 2-0 on the road this season. The last time the Badgers suffered a loss in a nonconference home game was UNLV's 23-5 win on September 13th, 2003.
The Badgers will hope to bounce back next week when they visit Iowa in their Big Ten opener. The Cougars will play host to McNeese State.
