As Washington and Texas A&M go back and forth in the No. 5 position of the College Football Playoff Rankings, both teams lost key components for the remainder of the season. Beginning with the Washington Huskies, who will be without defensive end Joe Mathis due to a foot injury.
Mathis has not played the last three games, and will now undergo surgery for the injury, which he suffered in October. The senior had five sacks and 7.5 tackles for loss in six games this season. The defensive line as a whole has missed his presence, as they have totaled just three sacks in three games without him, compared to 24 in the six games with him.
The Huskies improved to 9-0 last week, overtaking the No. 5 spot, as the Aggies fell to No. 8 following a loss to Mississippi State on Saturday. Washington visits the USC Trojans this week , looking to improve to 10-0.
Meanwhile, the aforementioned Aggies have had a tough week. To go along with the upset loss, A&M found out that they will be without quarterback Trevor Knight for the remainder of the regular season due to a shoulder injury. Fortunately, the setback will not require surgery.
The injury occurred while diving for a touchdown in the second quarter of Saturday's loss. He did return briefly later in the quarter after sitting out, but remained in street clothes for the rest of the game. Knight had started all nine games for Texas A&M, as the team will now turn to Jake Hubenak against Ole Miss.
Knight has recorded 13 passing and 10 rushing touchdowns this season after coming over as a graduate transfer in January. Head coach Kevin Sumlin has not yet ruled out his QB for their bowl game.
