The fourth-ranked Virginia Cavaliers remained unbeaten on the season Tuesday night, but this recent victory may be the most impressive one of their season. De'Andre Hunter scored 21 points to lead the fourth-ranked Cavaliers over the ninth-ranked Virginia Tech Hokies at home, 81-59. Ty Jerome added 14 points and a career-high 12 assists, as Virginia improved to 16-0 on the season. Hunter shot 8-of-12 on the night, helping Virginia make 58 percent of their shots on the game, including 54 percent from three-point range. The win for the Cavaliers also moves them to 4-0 in conference play, as they won the first meeting between the two schools where both teams were ranked in the top 10.
Virginia remains as just one of two teams that are still undefeated in the country, along with the second-ranked Michigan Wolverines. With the top-ranked Duke Blue Devils falling at home to the Syracuse Orange on Monday night, the Wolverines are expected to move to No. 1 if they do not lose before next Monday, and Virginia could very well take the No. 2 spot.
Tuesday's victory helped the Cavaliers avenge a 61-60 loss to their in-state rival last season at John Paul Jones Arena, although the veteran Guy claimed that it wasn't on his mind at all during the game. Virginia Tech suffered their first loss in conference play and just their second of the season, as they were led by Nickeil Alexander-Walker's 19 points. Ahmed Hill added 14 points, as Virginia Tech fell short of recording the first 15-1 start in program history.
The Cavaliers' schedule does not get any easier, as they move on to a showdown with the Blue Devils at Cameron Indoor Stadium on Saturday night. Meanwhile, the Hokies will host Wake Forest, who took out No. 17 NC State on Tuesday.
