Spurs' Popovich Ties Record With Win Over Sixers
Gregg Popovich will go down as one of, if not the, greatest coaches of all time, and he added to his resume on Thursday night. The San Antonio Spurs took care of the Philadelphia 76ers 102-86 for the coach's 1,127th career win, tying the record for most wins for a coach with one franchise. He ties the mark set by Jerry Sloan of the Utah Jazz, who resigned in 2011 after 23 years in the league. It was the Spurs' defense that led the way on Thursday, forcing 23 turnovers and recording 15 steals, both of which were season-highs. Kawhi Leonard had 19 points, while Dewayne Dedmon had 13 points and 10 rebounds for his second double-double. The Spurs held the Sixers to just 33 total points in the second half on just 10 made field goals.
Wizards Extend Home Win Streak to 16
The Washington Wizards are the definition of defending their home floor on the season, as they recorded their 16th straight home win with a 116-108 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers Thursday night. John Wall had 33 points and 11 assists to lead the way, while Bradley Beal added 23 in the win. Marcin Gortat had his best game of the year with a season-high 21, as Washington improved to 21-6 in D.C. on the year. The Wizards' home streak is the second-longest in team history, while they have also won six in a row overall. They now sit in fourth place in the East at 29-20. Jordan Clarkson led the lowly Lakers with 20 points, as they fell to 17-35 on the year, including 5-22 away from the Staples Center.
Marleau Scores 500th Career Goal
Patrick Marleau of the San Jose Sharks joined an elite company late Thursday night, as he became the 45th player in NHL history with 500 career goals. He did so with a power-play goal in the first period of San Jose's 4-1 win over the Vancouver Canucks. The 37-year-old is also just the 18th player to reach the milestone with his original team. He has been red hot as of late, with seven goals and an assist in the past five games. Marleau is the first player in franchise history with 500 goals, as the veteran has spent all 19 years of his career in San Jose. He now sits at 44th on the all-time scoring list, as the goal was also the 19th of his season. It does help that his Sharks sit in first place of the Pacific Division with 68 points.
