The 13th-ranked Villanova Wildcats went through a stretch of upset losses earlier this season, but they have overcome that to get back in to the top 15 of the AP Rankings. They fell back in to that trend for at least one day on Sunday afternoon, blowing a big lead to in a 71-65 loss to the St. John's Red Storm. The Red Storm overcame a 14-point deficit in the second half to stun the Wildcats, doing so with a 20-5 run over the final 12:30 of regulation. That run gave them their first lead of the game en route to the upset, which was their 19th win of the season, and the Wildcats' sixth defeat. It was also the Red Storm's first win over Villanova at Madison Square Garden in 17 years, and they pulled it off in front of a raucous crowd of 20,000 people.
LG Figueroa led the Red Storm with 22 points, as they trailed by as many as 19 points on the day, including 17 late in the first half. St. John's began a rally right before halftime, scoring the final six points of the first half, including Justin Simon's buzzer-beating three to cut the deficit to 11 points heading in to the locker room. Figueroa's three-pointer in the second half is what gave the Red Storm their first lead in the second half, as they improved back over .500 at 7-6 in conference play.
