Veteran forward Elton Brand announced his retirement late last week after 17 seasons in the NBA. Brand made the announcement at the Sixers training camp facility, calling his time in the league "a wonderful journey." The big man had not played in the preseason, but will collect $1 million from Philadelphia.
Brand was in his second stint with the Sixers, this after once signing a five-year, $82 million contract with the team in 2008. He also spent time with the Bulls, Clippers, Hawks, and Mavericks.
The Chicago Bulls selected the forward out of Duke with the first pick of the 1999 draft, and he went on to share the Rookie of the Year award with Steve Francis in the 1999-2000 season. Brand has been named to two All-Star teams. His best season saw him average 20 points and 10 rebounds with the Clippers in 2003-04.
The 37-year-old also went on to call his career an "honor and privilege", as he leaves with nothing but respect for and from his peers.
