The Pacific Division race was on full display at the Scotiabank Saddledome Thursday night, with the top two teams doing battle in Calgary. On this night, it was the second-place San Jose Sharks inching closer to the first-place Calgary Flames with a 5-2 road win. Evander Kane led the charge with two goals and an assist, as the Sharks pulled within two points of first place in the division. Kane's big night also keeps him hot against their division rivals, as he now has nine goals and 13 points in just five games against the Flames since coming over to San Jose in a trade with the Buffalo Sabres last February.
The Sharks have gotten so much closer in the division race with four consecutive victories, but they sit with two less regulation/overtime wins than Calgary on the season. Tomas Hertl chipped in with two goals on Thursday, while Brett Burns also found the back of the net in the Sharks' 37th win of the season. Martin Jones made 36 saves between the pipes, including 12 in the final 20 minutes, standing on his head to rob the Flames' top threat, Johnny Gaudreau.
Mark Jankowski and TJ Brodie scored in the loss for the Flames, who lost at home in regulation for the first time in nine games. Mike Smith made 16 saves in relief of David Rittich and took the loss for Calgary, who will visit the Vancouver Canucks on Saturday. The Sharks will hit the road against the Edmonton Oilers that same night.
