The San Jose Sharks locked up their star defenseman before he tested the mark, signing Brent Burns to an eight-year contract extension. The deal was announced on Tuesday, and is worth $64 million, paying him $8 million per year, and includes signing bonuses and limited no-move clauses.
Burn was set to become an unrestricted free agent next summer, and was expected to be the top target by numerous teams.
The 31-year-old lead all defenseman with 27 goals last season, finishing as a finalist for the Norris Trophy. So far this season, he leads the Sharks with seven goals and nine assists in 19 games.
Burns is now expected to be anchoring San Jose's blue line for the rest of the prime of his career.
