The New Orleans Saints released running back C.J. Spiller just one week into the season, announced on Tuesday. Spiller was inactive in the team's season-opening loss to the Raiders.
The 29-year-old was in his second season with the Saints after signing a four-year, $16 million deal in 2015. New Orleans paid him $9 million for a total of 13 games played.
Spiller admitted that he was caught off-guard with the move but did say "you know what, I leave on good terms." The former Buffalo Bill was inactive for a non-health reason in week 1. The team elected to go with veteran back Travaris Cadet.
After undergoing minor knee surgery during last year's training camp, Spiller has just 112 rushing yards, 239 receiving yards, and two touchdowns in the regular season. He was replaced by Cadet for the final two weeks of the year.
The new free agent was drafted ninth overall by Buffao in the 2010 draft, and had his best season in 2012. That year, he ran for 1,244 yards, and added 459 receiving yards. He has a total of 22 touchdowns in his career, but is now looking for "the next right opportunity."
