The Houston Rockets made an unexpected move on Sunday night when they acquired the recently-troubled Ty Lawson from the Denver Nuggets. Houston will send a couple of non-guaranteed contracts and a 2016 first-round pick to Denver for the guard. The deal was not finalized until Monday.
The 27 year-old is currently in rehab in Los Angeles following his second DUI arrest in 2015. It was ruled that he will not face DUI charges in California and Colorado until completing the 30-day treatment program.
He arrived for treatment Saturday at Cliffside Malibu, a celebrity rehab center in California that treats patients with addiction and psychiatric issues.
Lawson will not need a chaperone by his side at all times like Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryant and Texas Rangers outfielder Josh Hamilton did.
The now former Nugget was arrested in January on DUI charges and was ordered to not drink alcohol or violate laws as part of his bond. The NBA has yet to announce any discipline for Lawson, as they are still looking in to the arrest.
The now Houston Rocket averaged 15.2 points and a career-high 9.6 assists in his final season with Denver. The Nuggets selected Emmanuel Mudiay with the seventh overall pick in the recent draft, and he is expected to take over as the starting point guard.
