The 2015 season is slowly turning into a season to forget for the Boston Red Sox, and the bad news kept coming on Saturday. Second baseman Dustin Pedroia has dealt with a nagging hamstring injury for most of the season, and that injury has caught up to him yet again. The Red Sox sent Pedroia back on the DL with bruising in the hamstring.
This injury has kept Boston's second baseman out for about a month around the All-Star break, and he will miss at least another couple weeks of action. Pedroia said after Saturday's 5-1 loss to the Detroit Tigers that he feels a lot better now, and that the injury just needs a little more healing time.
The Red Sox activated him from the disabled list on July 17th, but Pedroia struggled, going hitless in 18 at-bats over his first four games. He did go 1-for-4 in Wednesday's game at Houston, but missed the next two games due to bruising in the injured area.
The training staff gave the former AL MVP an MRI on Saturday, and he might receive a PRP injection on Monday to speed up the healing process. There is no official timetable for the four-time All-Star's return.
The injury originally occurred on June 24th, and the former Gold Glove winner was eligible to return for the final series before the All-Star break. Boston found it necessary to extend his rest into the second half.
The Red Sox called up knuckleballer Steven Wright to take Pedroia's spot on the roster. Wright made the start on Saturday for Boston against Detroit. Brock Holt made his third straight start at second base, and is expected to take over at the position until Pedroia returns.
