The Boston Red Sox have a lot more work to do than they did last season if they want to defend their World Series title come October. They got some extra help for their starting rotation on Saturday, doing so within their division by acquiring right-hander Andrew Cashner from the Baltimore Orioles in exchange for two minor league players. The Red Sox made this move since they plan on moving Nathan Eovaldi to the bullpen as a closer once he returns from the injured list. General manager Dave Dombrowski says that Cashner is set to start on Tuesday against the Toronto Blue Jays.
Boston also received cash considerations in the deal, as they hope to improve their Postseason odds, despite an 11-2 blowout loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers Saturday night at Fenway Park. Red Sox manager Alex Cora spoke highly of Cashner after the loss, pointing to his veteran experience that will help Boston compete for a playoff spot.
The 32-year-old has made 17 starts for Baltimore this season, going 9-3 with a 3.83 ERA, and has gotten red hot since the start of summer. In five starts since the start of June, he has recorded an ERA of 1.43. He is in the final season of a two-year, $16 million contract that he signed with the O's.
The right-hander has 10 years of major league experience, going 55-82 with the Orioles, Texas Rangers, Miami Marlins, San Diego Padres, and Chicago Cubs. The Red Sox are currently in third place in the AL East, nine games behind the first-place New York Yankees. They are also 1.5 games behind in the American League Wild Card race, as they have a tough stretch coming up, including 14 games in 15 days against the Yankees and Tampa Bay Rays beginning Monday.
