The Tampa Bay Rays are on one heck of a run as of late, but unfortunately for them, it will not be enough in the tough American League. The Rays handed the Boston Red Sox their first series sweep of the season with a 9-1 rout at Tropicana Field on Sunday afternoon. Blake Snell allowed two hits over six innings and struck out eight in the Rays' eighth straight win.
Snell has not given up more than one run over his past 14 home starts, as he continued to dominate the Red Sox this season. The hurler has a 1.08 ERA in four starts against Boston, and improved to 16-5 on the season overall. Tampa Bay got red hot over the three-game series, outscoring Boston, 24-5, as the best team in baseball has now dropped six of their past eight games.
Tampa Bay also got to their former teammate, Nathan Eovaldi, who continued to struggle with the Red Sox after a hot start with his new team. He allowed six runs, five of which were earned, on eight hits over four innings. He has allowed 35 hits over 17 innings in his past four starts, as he dropped to 2-2 with the Red Sox. He joined Boston via trade on July 25th.
Matt Duffy had three hits and drove in two for the Rays, who are nine games over .500 for the first time since 2015. They also recorded their first unbeaten homestand of more than one series this season, as they won all seven games against the Red Sox and Kansas City Royals.
The Rays will now hit the road to battle another first-place team in the Atlanta Braves beginning on Tuesday night. The Red Sox will return home to host the Miami Marlins that same night.
