The Boston Red Sox are so good that two wins in one day just is not that big of a deal for them. The best team in baseball pulled that off on Saturday in Baltimore by sweeping their doubleheader against the Orioles. It starter off in the afternoon with David Price striking out 10 over six innings in a 5-0 shutout victory at Camden Yards. The Orioles got just five hits off of the left-hander, who did not walk a batter, but needed 94 pitches to to get through six.
Jackie Bradley Jr. went deep twice, both solo shots, in this game, while Eduardo Nunez added a two-run blast in the win. Price's victory was his 12th of the season and sixth straight against Baltimore, as he struck out at least one in every inning and did not allow a runner to pass second base.
Three other relievers came in after Price to finish the Red Sox's 12th shutout victory of the season. That puts them in a tie with the Chicago Cubs, Pittsburgh Pirates, and Cleveland Indians for the major league lead in that category. Adam Jones had two hits for the Orioles, who were officially eliminated from playoff contention on Friday night, and clinched their second straight losing season with this loss.
The day was not yet over for the Red Sox, as MVP candidate J.D. Martinez went deep twice in the nightcap, leading Boston to a 6-4 win to complete the doubleheader sweep. Martinez now leads the majors with 37 home runs, 104 RBIs, and 143 hits. This big performance in game 2 of the day helped him overcome an 0-for-4 performance in the first game.
The Red Sox have now won nine of 10, improving baseball's best record to 84-35, as they lead the New York Yankees by nine games in the AL East. Boston used a bullpen day for the second game, beginning with Hector Velazquez. Joe Kelly went on to earn his fourth victory, while Craig Kimbrel took care of the ninth for his 34th save.
Joey Rickard and Trey Mancini both went deep for the O's, who dropped to 2-13 against the Red Sox this season. They did have their chances in this one, but stranded 10 runners and finished just 2-for-9 with runners in scoring position. They will hope to avoid a four-game series sweep in the series finale on Sunday afternoon.
