The Nashville Predators finalized a deal on Monday, signing winger Filip Forsberg to a six-year, $36 million deal. This means Forsberg will be paid $6 million per season until the 2021-22 campaign. The deal also avoids the restricted free agent to receive offer sheets from other teams.
The 21-year-old lead the Predators with 33 goals and 64 points this past season, and leads the team in both categories over the past two seasons.
The Swede star has always had the goal of bringing a Stanley Cup to Nashville, and came even closer in this year's playoffs, advancing to the second round. They would be eliminated by the eventual Western Conference champions, San Jose Sharks, in seven games.
After this deal was announced, it seemed as if it was a no-brainer for Forsberg. When asked about his decision to stay with the Predators, he said "to be honest with you, I never really thought about anything else but staying in Nashville." He would also add "I think we've got something really interesting going and I wanted to be a part of that."
Well, he will be a vital part of the growth of a Predators team that has a bright upside that sees them contending in the Western Conference for years to come.
