The Detroit Pistons went in on Big 3 MVP Joe Johnson, adding veteran depth as they hope to return to the playoffs in the Eastern Conference, but at a higher seed. The Pistons gave Johnson a one-year contract that is worth $2.6 million, and does include $200,000 in guaranteed money. The rest of the contract will become fully guaranteed if Johnson is still on the roster after January 7th. The 38-year-old will be returning to the NBA for his first season since the 2017-2018 campaign, when he was with the Houston Rockets.
He was also with the Utah Jazz during his most recent NBA season, but spent time with the Nets from 2012 to 2016, earning an All-Star appearance in that span. He played in 55 games in the 2017-2018 season, averaging 6.8 points per game on 40.6% shooting.
The seven-time All-Star is mostly known for his time with the Atlanta Hawks from 2005 to 2012, with his best year coming in the 2006-2007 season, when he averaged 25.0 points per game. He has averaged at least 20 points per game five times in his 17-year NBA career. Johnson also worked out for the Milwaukee Bucks and Brooklyn Nets, but settled for a Pistons team that is welcoming head coach Dwane Casey back for his second season. They have also added Derrick Rose and Markieff Morris this off-season.
