The Pittsburgh Penguins hung on to another young piece to their puzzle, as they look to keep their roster as young as possible around Sidney Crosby. The team re-signed forward Zach Aston-Reese to a two-year contract on Monday afternoon, keeping him with the team through the 2020-2021 season. The deal will pay him $1 million per season, as the agreement was made just minutes before the young player went in to arbitration. Aston-Reese expressed that he did not want to head there, saying the contract got done "right on time."
The 24-year-old is slowly starting to break out for Pittsburgh, as they hope for him to continue to improve as he gets older. He set some career highs with eight goals and nine assists, despite playing in just 43 games this past season due to a hand injury. He jumped all over the depth chart within the season, playing on the top line with Crosby, as well as the fourth line at one point. He is entering his third NHL season, but only played in 16 games in his rookie year, with four goals and two assists. He is hoping that him being under a new contract can also lead to his first full season on the ice, barring any injuries, as the Penguins look to bounce back to the top of the Metropolitan Division.
