The Pittsburgh Penguins have been one of the hottest teams in the league as of late, moving up the Eastern Conference standings quickly, attempting to put pressure on the first-place Washington Capitals. Although, they did take a significant blow this week, ironically on a scoring play. Jake Guentzel scored during their 5-2 win over the Ottawa Senators on Monday night, but it was the end of that play that came down hard on the team. Guentzel went flying in to the boards behind the net, head first, left the game, and did not return. It was announced on Tuesday that the forward will undergo shoulder surgery and is expected to miss four to six months.
The 25-year-old has been a big help to the Penguins' recent hot stretch, especially with captain Sidney Crosby dealing with injuries as of late. Guentzel leading the way has helped him go on to make his first-career All-Star team, as he suffered the injury to his right shoulder on Monday while netting his 20th goal of the season in the third period against Ottawa.
This latest incident adds to the injury list for the Penguins, which has included Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Kris Letang, Bryant Rust, and Patric Hornqvist. Their captain has been out since mid-November with an abdominal injury and there is no timetable for his return, but the Penguins have gone 14-5-3 during his absence. That has gotten them back in to the top three of the Metropolitan Division, as they take their short-handed team back home against the San Jose Sharks on Thursday night.
