Heading in to week 3 of the NFL Preseason, the New England Patriots added to their secondary. The Patriots acquired linebacker Barkevious Mingo from the Cleveland Browns for a fifth-round pick in the 2017 NFL Draft. The 25-year-old, Mingo, was the sixth overall pick in the 2013 draft.
The Browns did not pick up his fifth-year option, which means Mingo was set to become a free agent after this season. There is some familiarity in New England, as the defensive back was selected while Mike Lombardi was with the Browns' organization. Lombardi is currently an assistant for Patriots' head coach Bill Belichick, and has been since 2014.
New England now has the number six and seven picks from the 2013 draft, as they acquired offensive lineman Jonathan Cooper from the Arizona Cardinals earlier this off-season. They sent Chandler Jones to Arizona in that trade.
Mingo started 16 games in three seasons with the Browns, as he had a hard time finding a role with the team. His sack numbers went down with each season, from five, to two, to zero. The Cleveland Browns are now down to three of their eight first-round picks from 2011 to 2015.
