Demaryius Thomas's back and forth, short time with the New England Patriots came to an end on Tuesday after just one week as the team dealt him to the New York Jets. This move comes after the wide receiving core became a bit crowded with the signing of Antonio Brown last weekend. Thomas did not play in the Patriots' Week 1 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday night. He was originally cut by the Patriots when the final rosters were announced after the preseason, but when N'Keal Harry was placed on injured reserve, Thomas was signed right back.
The Jets sent a sixth-round draft pick for the 2021 NFL Draft to get Thomas, as this comes one day after head coach Adam Gase criticized his team, specifically their receivers, following a 17-16 loss to the Buffalo Bills on Sunday. The team also changed their kicker for the third time already this season, signing free agent Sam Ficken. They also waived kicker Kaare Vedvik, who struggled in Sunday's loss with a missed extra point and 45-yard field goal. The Jets have been through four kickers since training camp.
Thomas is familiar with his new coach, Gase, who was the quarterbacks coach and then offensive coordinator with the Denver Broncos while Thomas was there. The wideout spent the first nine years of his NFL career with Denver before getting traded to the Houston Texans last season. He has been productive everywhere he's gone, but with Brown, Josh Gordon, Julian Edelman, and Phillip Dorsett all catching balls from Tom Brady, there was no more room left for Thomas to get playing time. Instead, he will now be a rival of the Pats in the AFC East, as the Jets look to bounce back with Le'Veon Bell and Sam Darnold against the Cleveland Browns on Monday Night Football.
