Hoyer was the Patriots back up until August of 2019, when the team named fourth-round draft pick Jarrett Stidham in that spot behind Tom Brady. Stidham is the current favorite to land the starting job after Brady left the Patriots in free agency in favor of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Cody Kessler is also on the roster and is more in competition to be one of the other two's backup.
The former Michigan State Spartan's first stint with the Patriots was from 2009 to 2011, as he appeared in 13 games during that time, completing 27 of 43 pass attempts for 286 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. He played in 10 games for them from 2017 to 2018, throwing for just 49 yards on 5-of-7 completions.
He did get a start with the Colts last season, and appeared in four games while Brissett dealt with injuries throughout the 2019 campaign. In his lone season with the Colts he completed 35 of 65 pass attempts for 372 yards, four touchdowns, and four interceptions.
