The Baltimore Orioles are in the middle of a rebuilding phase, so the sexiest name was not expected to take over as their manager. They did not go for that, as they announced that Brandon Hyde would be taking over that role next season. Hyde has been the bench coach with the Chicago Cubs, where he was also the team's director of player development and first base coach. The 45-year-old will be replacing Buck Showalter, as the Orioles are coming off a tough 47-115 season, which had them in last place in the American League East.
Hyde took over as the bench coach under manager Joe Maddon last season, which included him running Spring Training for February and March. The new O's head man also interviewed with the Texas Rangers, Minnesota Twins, Los Angeles Angels, and Toronto Blue Jays this off-season. Those other four teams have already found their new guy.
Hyde had two stints as the Cubs' bench coach, also doing so under Rick Renteria during the 2014 campaign. This will be his first crack as a manager in the majors. He now takes over in an Orioles organization that had a complete overhaul in management after this past season's debacle. They also parted ways with Executive Vice President Dan Duquette, who has since been replaced by Mike Elias.
