The fifth-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes did not seem to be phased at all by the absence of their head coach, Urban Meyer, or the tough weather conditions on Saturday afternoon. The Buckeyes overcame a lightning delay and racked up 77 points in a 46-point win on their home field. The final score was 77-31, as quarterback Dwayne Haskins threw for 313 yards and five touchdowns, as they got off to a quick start by scoring on five of their first six possessions.
It was the first time in six years that Meyer was not on the Buckeyes' sidelines for a game, as he is serving a three-game suspension for the domestic violence scandal involving former assistant coach Bruce Smith. He will be allowed to return to the team's practice on Monday, but he will still be out for the next two games.
Haskins threw 22-for-30 in his first game since replacing the graduated J.T. Barrett. Despite the big win, the Beavers' offense did have a big day against Ohio State's defense. Their quarterback, Connor Blount, threw for 169 yards and two touchdowns in the loss. The one bright side for their defense was the five sacks on Blount, including two by Nick Bosa.
Oregon State was also sparked by two long touchdown runs from Artaivs Pierce, as they move on to their home opener next week against Southern Utah.
The Buckeyes had a nice rush attack as well, featuring 186 rush yards and three touchdowns on 20 carries for Mike Weber. They will open up Big Ten play next week at home against Rutgers.
