The NHL preseason is in full swing, which means the regular season is just a couple weeks away. That being said, the Boston Bruins took an opportunity to lock up one of their key parts, giving Brad Marchand an eight-year extension worth $49 million. This will keep him in Boston through the 2024-25 season.
The contract, which was announced Monday, has an annual value of $6.125 million and includes a a full no-movement clause and/or no-trade clause throughout the entire deal.
The 28-year-old Marchand had 37 goals and 24 assists, along with a plus-minus of 21 in 77 games last season. He has 153 goals and 136 assists during his seven-year career, all spent with the Bruins.
Marchand did play for Canada in the World Cup of Hockey and luckily stayed healthy. Unfortunately, that cannot be said for everyone. Marian Gaborik of the Los Angeles Kings suffered a foot injury while playing for Team Europe during the World Cup.
The injury occurred during his team's win over Team Sweden, as he took a puck off the foot during the second period. He will sit out the finals, which begin today against Canada.
The 34-year-old was replaced by Mikkel Boedker of the San Jose Sharks on Team Europe.
Gaborik played in 54 games last season, recording 12 goals and 10 assists, but had just one assist in the postseason. The Kings open up their season October 12th in San Jose.
