The Miami Dolphins made the expected trade on Monday afternoon, just not with the expected team, as they dealt running back Kenyan Drake to the Arizona Cardinals. The Dolphins got a 2020 sixth-round draft pick, which can become a fifth-round draft pick if certain conditions are met. The deal comes as a bit of a surprise with the likes of the Detroit Lions and Tennessee Titans as the top contenders to land the tailback, both of which have playoff hopes. The Arizona Cardinals are not expected to contend for the postseason, but are struggling with injuries at that position.
Both David Johnson and Chase Edmonds are dealing with injuries, as Johnson is out with an ankle injury and Edmonds is sidelined with a hamstring. Both players are expected to be out for at least Thursday night's game against the San Francisco 49ers. The 25-year-old Drake was expected to get dealt after he did not travel with the team for Monday night's game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. He was the Dolphins' leading rusher, but their 0-6 start has them selling quickly. Although, they now have 13 picks in the 2020 draft, including three in the first round, and two more in the second round.
In another trade that stayed within the state of New York, the New York Jets sent defensive lineman Leonard Williams to the New York Giants. The Jets got a third-round pick for the 2020 draft and a fifth-rounder for 2021 in return, as that fifth-rounder could become a fourth-round selection. The Jets are expected to pay $4 million of the remaining $6 million that is owed to Williams, whom the 2-6 Giants are expected to target for re-signing in the off-season. The former first-round draft pick will be an unrestricted free agent, but he adds to the Giants attempt to stack the D-line. The 25-year-old was the sixth overall pick, which adds to his value, as he is expected to get good money from the Giants, who do not want to let him go.
