The Indianapolis Colts may have added another veteran quarterback in Brian Hoyer on Monday, but they also took care of the man they have pegged as their starter with Andrew Luck retiring. The Colts gave Jacoby Brissett a two-year contract extension Monday night, which is worth $30 million. The NFL Network was the first to reveal the financial details of the contract on Monday, which does include $20 million in guaranteed money. Brissett became the starter after Luck announced his retirement immediately following the Colts' second preseason game against the Chicago Bears at Lucas Oil Stadium.
Brissett was entering the final season of his four-year, $3.41 million rookie contract, which gave him a base salary of $2 million for 2019. This new contract will replace his rookie deal, which has him under contract with the Colts through the 2020 season. The 26-year-old has been working with the Colts' starting unit since last April due to Luck's multiple injuries, but officially became the starter on August 24th. He started two games as a rookie with the New England Patriots in 2016, this after getting selected in the third round of the NFL Draft. He was acquired by the Colts in September of 2017 because of Luck's shoulder injury, and it has paid off thus far, as he will be starting Week 1 on Sunday against the Los Angeles Chargers.
The Minnesota Vikings added another weapon for Kirk Cousins heading in to Week 1 against the Atlanta Falcons, agreeing to a deal with wide receiver Josh Doctson. The wideout was released by the Washington Redskins as the final roster cuts were made last Saturday, despite him being a first-round draft pick in 2016. The contract is just for one year, as it reunites Doctson and Cousins from his rookie season in 2017 with Washington. He had his best season as a professional with Cousins, where he had 35 catches for 502 receiving yards and six touchdowns. Doctson was the 22nd overall pick by the Redskins, who did not pick up their team option on his contract earlier this year. He will basically be replacing Laquan Treadwell on the roster, after the receiver was cut following three seasons that that saw him catch 56 passes for 517 yards and a touchdown.
