The Cleveland Browns will be down a familiar receiver for the first four weeks to begin the regular season following the news on Friday, which revealed that Antonio Callaway will be suspended four games for violating the league's substance-abuse policy. There is no appeal or argument from the wideout, who is taking full responsibility for his actions that led to this suspension. He does have an incident from August of 2018 that has been under investigation, but it is unclear if this ban is stemming from that citation.
Callaway has struggled with these kind of issues in the past, culminating with a positive test for marijuana during the 2018 NFL Scouting Combine. He was then cited for possession and driving with a suspended license in August, which is when police also found bullets for a gun in his car. The possession charge was dropped on January 25th, but he did plead guilty to speeding and driving with a suspended license. As a rookie last season he caught 43 passes for 586 yards and five touchdowns, and in last Thursday's preseason opener, he suffered a high ankle sprain against the Washington Redskins.
Meanwhile, the Detroit Lions ins are creating a competition for the backup quarterback position behind Matthew Stafford, and added a veteran to that equation on Saturday. The team agreed to a deal with quarterback Josh Johnson, who will be joining the 13th team of his NFL career. The former fifth-round draft pick of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2008 has appeared in 33 career NFL games, but did not get his first win as a starter until last season with the Redskins. Over his carer, he has completed 148 of 268 passes for 1,632 yards, eight touchdowns, and 14 interceptions. He saw the most playing time with the Bucs, appearing in 26 games with five starts.
