The Washington Nationals were forced to place All-Star pitcher Stephen Strasburg on the disabled list on Monday with what the team is calling right elbow soreness. The pitcher was reportedly willing to continue throwing, but the team did not want to risk anything with a man who has already gone through Tommy John surgery.
Manager Dusty Baker expects Strasburg to spend the minimum time on the DL. The team recalled pitcher A.J. Cole from Triple-A as the replacement, and he started in Monday's loss to the Orioles.
The oft-injured star was very confident when asked if he'll be pack for the postseason. He called the chances "a hundred percent" that he'll be good to go.
Strasburg got off to an impressive 15-1 start to the season, but has since gone 0-3 with a 14.66 ERA in his last three starts. He has missed time already this season, sitting out from June 19th to July 3rd, a span of 17 games, on the DL with a back injury.
He came back like nothing ever happened, but his recent struggles worry the team due to his surgical history. This is definitely a precautionary measure to give the right-hander a little bit of rest and avoid anything major heading into October.
