The San Francisco 49ers are now three quarterbacks deep in to their season, and that normally wouldn't be a good thing, but somehow, it worked out perfectly for them on Thursday night. Nick Mullens made his NFL debut in place of the injured C.J. Beathard, as he led the Niners over the Oakland Raiders, 34-3. Mullens had the most productive debut since the merger, as he threw for 262 yards and three touchdowns, sending the 49ers to their second win of the season, both of which have come at home. Meanwhile, the Raiders dropped to 1-7 in Jon Gruden's first season back, including 0-4 away from home.
The undrafted free agent out of Southern Mississippi received a call from Brett Favre after the game to congratulate him on his performance, while also getting his Twitter account verified. He found Pierre Garcon, Kendrick Bourne and Greg Kittle for his three touchdown passes, as he got two of those scores on the first two drives of the game. He was also helped out by Raheem Mosert, who found the end zone from 52 yards out on the ground.
On the other side of the ball, the Raiders' offense was shut down by the Niners' defense, which recorded eight sacks on quarterback Derek Carr for the first time since 2009. The Raiders have now dropped four in a row on the season, getting outscored by a total of 85 points during that skid. Carr completed just 16 of his 22 passes for 171 yards, before getting taken out for backup A.J. McCarron in the fourth. McCarron was also sacked once before the end of the game.
The Niners lost quarterback Jimmy Garropolo for the season with a torn ACL in Week 3, as Beathard had taken over, despite dropping nine of his 10 career NFL starts. That could lead to a bit of a debate on who will start come November 12th against the New York Giants. Meanwhile, the Raiders will return home on the 11th against the Los Angeles Chargers.
