The Michigan State Spartans could not find an offensive groove in the first half of their top-15, conference showdown with Ohio State on Saturday, but the second half was a completely different story. The eighth-ranked Spartans scored 50 points in the second half to get past the 14th-ranked Buckeyes, 86-77, in Columbus, Ohio. Cassius Winston finished with 25 points, while Nick Ward added 21 points in Michigan State's eighth straight victory. The road team trailed by seven points after one half of play, but outscored Ohio State, 50-34, after halftime to snap the Buckeyes' six-game winning streak. It was also Ohio State's first loss in conference play.
Kaleb Wesson led Ohio State with 25 points, despite foul trouble, while Luther Muhammed scored 12 in their first home loss of the year, and second defeat of the season. The Spartans are now 4-0 in conference play, and have not lost since November 27th. Out of their 13 victories this season, none have been bigger than what they pulled off on Saturday.
The Spartans were playing short-handed for a second straight game, as Joshua Langford remained out with an injury. They really got hot once the temperature got cold, doing so with a perfect 6-0 month of December. It was a back and forth affair once Michigan State overcame their halftime deficit, as the game was tied six times before Michigan State jumped ahead for good. The Spartans will play host to Purdue on Tuesday night, while Ohio State will hit the road against Rutgers on Wednesday.
