The Houston Astros continued on with their second-best record in the majors with a 4-3 win over the Boston Red Sox on Friday night, but it came at a cost. The AL West Division leaders lost outfielder George Springer to a hamstring injury, which is going to land him on the injured list. The injury is to his left hamstring and occurred when he was chasing after a Xander Bogaerts popup in the eighth inning. He was seen holding on to his left leg, and was helped off the field by his teammate, Tony Kemp.
The outfielder finished the night 0-for-3, but has gotten off to a tremendous start in 2019, leading the American League with 17 home runs and 43 RBIs. He is going to get more information on the injury Saturday, but when asked about it after the game, he simply said "yeah, it sucks, to be honest." This is bad timing for him, as he had just returned on Friday, playing in his first game since Sunday due to back tightness.
Elsewhere in the majors, the New York Mets are giving two veterans another shot to rejuvenate their major league careers, signing outfielder Matt Kemp and pitcher Ervin Santana to minor league deals. Both players have been cut already this season, Kemp by the Cincinnati Reds, and Santana by the Chicago White Sox.
Both deals are pending physicals, but the 34-year-old Kemp is hoping to get back to the way he was last season with the Los Angeles Dodgers, where he made his third All-Star team. This season, he was batting just .200 with one home run and five RBIs before getting cut on April 23rd. Meanwhile, the 36-year-old Santana was designated for assignment on April 29th after going 0-2 with a 9.45 ERA in three starts for Chicago this season. A stint in the minors and a fresh start in a new place may be best for both players to get back on track.
