The Toronto Blue Jays announced on Saturday that they have agreed to a two-year contract extension with first baseman Justin Smoak. The deal is worth $8.25 million, and will pay Smoak $4.125 million per season. It also includes a $6 million player option for the 2019 campaign.
The 29-year-old was set to become a free agent after this season. He is with his third major league team in his seventh year. So far this season, Smoak it batting .234 with nine home runs and 23 RBIs. Since being drafted 11th overall by the Texas Rangers in 2008, he has a career .225 average, 101 home runs, 316 RBIs, and a .310 on-base percentage.
The first baseman also had a stop with the Seattle Mariners, where it was his first taste of being an everyday player. Smoak has admitted that he has not lived up to the expectations as a first-round pick, but his want to stay in the American League East may help him get his career where he wants it to be.
The Los Angeles Dodgers placed outfielder Trayce Thompson on the 15-day disabled list due to back soreness. The team called up outfielder Zach Walters from Triple-A Oklahoma City. Walters was acquired in a trade with the Cleveland Indians on April 10th.
The injury originally occurred in May for Thompson, as he missed consecutive games multiple times due to it. Before the injury, the young star was batting .274 with a .578 slugging percentage in 41 games. Since then, he has a .185 average and .362 slugging percentage in 39 contests.
Thompson, the brother of Golden State Warriors star Klay Thompson, gives the Dodgers a good amount of punch in the middle of their lineup. As they sit in second place behind the best team in baseball, the Giants, Los Angeles will sure miss their young player as he hopes to eliminate this injury completely.
