The New York Mets have struggled to get ace Matt Harvey going this season, feeling if that were the case, they could surpass the Nationals in the NL East. The team made the tough decision of sending Harvey back on the disabled list on Wednesday due to discomfort in his right shoulder.
Harvey will be evaluated again on Thursday, but Logan Verrett is scheduled to start in place of him on Saturday against Washington. The team will also promote pitcher Seth Lugo from Triple-A.
The right-hander has struggled in his second season back from Tommy John Surgery, going 4-10 with a 4.86 ERA. In his most recent start on Monday against the Marlins, Harvey allowed six runs on 11 hits in 3.2 innings.
The Mets' rotation has taken a multiple hits this season, as they are still without Zack Wheeler until August. Noah Syndergaard and and Steven Matz are also said to be playing through minor injuries. They currently sit in second place behind the Nats in their division.
The Kansas City Royals also took a big blow, but this one came from the back-end of their bullpen, placing closer Wade Davis on the DL with a forearm strain. The 30-year-old was just selected to the All-Star team on Tuesday, and last pitched June 30th when he recorded his 19th save.
Overall this season, Davis is 1-0 with a 1.23 ERA, but has blown two save opportunities. This after blowing just one all of last season, saving 17 games and recording a 0.94 ERA. The team called up pitcher Brooks Pounders from Triple-A.
