The New York Mets stuck with a familiar face from his playing days to help keep their young team on the upswing heading in to the 2020 season. After parting ways with Mickey Callaway, despite turning their 2019 season around to nearly make the Postseason, the Mets have hired Carlos Beltran as their new manager. The former switch-hitting slugger retired after the 2017 season, when he won the World Series with the Houston Astros. He also spent time with the St. Louis Cardinals, New York Yankees, Texas Rangers, Kansas City Royals, and San Francisco Giants.
He is mostly know for his time with the Mets, where he played from the 2005 to the 2011 season. He may have taken strike three in Game 3 of the 2006 NLCS against the Cardinals, but he does rank in the top 10 in Mets history with 149 home runs, 559 RBIs, and 551 runs scored with them. Overall in his career, he finished with 435 long balls, while driving in 1,587 runs over 20 major league seasons.
This will be his first managerial job, although, he did interview for the Yankees' job before Aaron Boone got the gig after the 2017 season. He most recently spent time as an adviser to Yankees general manager Brian Cashman. The 42-year-old is the sixth manager hired this off-season, with two more openings still available with the Giants and the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Callaway was fired after just two seasons with the Mets, as he got things started with a disappointing 77-85 record in 2018, and then got off to a 41-51 start this past season. Led by the record-breaking power of Pete Alonso, the Mets ended up finishing 86-76 on the season, good for third place in the National League East Division, but on the outside looking in for the Wild Card picture. Although, that gives Beltran plenty of hope as he takes over to begin 2020, and the Mets looking to keep that momentum going for an entire season with hopes of returning to the Postseason next year.
