Howard had given his team a three-point lead with under a minute to play with two free throws, but Phil Booth's quick floater made it a one-point game. Neither team would score from there, as both defenses came up with big stops down the stretch, including Nova forcing a turnover from Howard, but Marquette's stop ended up being much larger than Villanova's.
Booth led Nova with 19 points, while Paschall chipped in with 17 for the Wildcats, who had won 11 in a row since falling, 74-71, to the Kansas Jayhawks on December 15th. They just could not slow down Howard, who shot 13-of-24 from the floor, including 5-for-11 from three-point range. He also made all seven of his free throws to help Marquette bounce back from an upset loss at home against St. John's last Tuesday. That was the second loss to St. John's for the Golden Eagles this season.
After falling behind by double digits in the second half, Nova used a 10-0 run to make the finish much more interesting, but they fell short and move on to host Providence on Wednesday night. The Golden Eagles will visit DePaul on Tuesday night.
