The 2nd-ranked Oregon Ducks all but cemented their college football playoff berth with a 51-13 win over the 7th-ranked Arizona Wildcats in the Pac-12 title game Friday night. QB Marcus Mariota made a bid for the Heisman Trophy as well, accounting for 5 touchdowns on the night. He threw for 313 yards and 2 scores, while running for a career-high 3 more in the win.
The Ducks now sit at 12-1 and will await to what seems to be inevitable Sunday, and that's their berth in to the inaugural college football playoffs. They are expected to play in familiar territory, in Pasadena, California for the Rose Bowl.
The Ducks offense helped them defeat the team that handed them their only loss of the season. Arizona got the best of Oregon on October 2nd 31-24, and they defeated the Ducks last season 42-16. The Wildcats held the Ducks to 144 yards rushing and sacked Mariota 5 times and forced 2 fumbles.
The Wildcats could not stop Oregon's high-powered offense, as the Ducks outgained them 640 to 224 yards. That included 324 rushing yards for Oregon, while holding Arizona to just 111 on the ground.
Mariota completed 25 of 38 passes and ran the ball 10 times for 33 yards. He holds the conference record with 53 touchdowns this season, 38 passing, 14 rushing.
Arizona QB Anu Solomon was 6 of 12 for 34 yards, before being replaced by third stringer Jerrard Randall.
The Oregon Ducks avenged the past upsets by Arizona, and are now on their way to contend for the National Championship.
