The Seattle Mariners are playing like a desperate team, as they currently find themselves out of the American League playoff pictures. Day-by-day they are working on changing that, and taking three straight games from the defending World Series Champions will definitely do that for them. They took their third straight game from the Houston Astros on Saturday night with a 3-2 victory at Minute Maid Park.
Ryon Healy finished with three hits, including the game-winning RBI single in the decisive three-run fourth inning. Kyle Seager and Chris Herrmann each added RBIs in that frame, as the M's overcame an early 2-0 deficit. The scoring would be non-existent both ways the rest of the night.
Wade LeBlanc earned his seventh win after going five innings and striking out five. He allowed just three hits, one of which drove in two runs on Tyler White's two-run single in the second inning. Guillermo Heredia also stepped up in center field with a diving catch to rob the Astros of tying the game on Tony Kemp's hard hit ball. There were no outs and a runner on first base and the time of this play.
This led to another close victory for Seattle this season, as they improved to 44-17 in games decided by two runs or fewer. Alex Colome was on the mound for Heredia's diving catch, which helped extend the reliever's scoreless streak to 18.2 innings. Four relievers came out of the M's bullpen to finish the victory, including Edwin Diaz getting his third save in as many days. Diaz struck out two in a perfect ninth inning to record his 45th save in 48 tries.
The Mariners have now cut their AL West deficit to just five games, and their AL Wild Card deficit behind the Oakland Athletics to 1.5 games. They can go for the sweep of the Astros in the series finale on TBS Sunday afternoon.
