After the stunning move by Scott Skiles to resign as head coach of the Orlando Magic last week, the team began an unexpected coaching hunt. A week later they have reportedly found their man, agreeing to a deal in principle with former Indiana Pacers head coach Frank Vogel. The Magic believed they were the best destination for Vogel, and were said to be battling the Memphis Grizzlies to sign him.
The 42-year-old also drew interests from the likes of the Houston Rockets and New York Knicks. He was fired by Larry Bird's Pacers on May 5th, despite leading the team to the playoffs this past season. They fell to the Toronto Raptors in six games in the first round.
He was named the head coach of the Pacers in 2011, spending six years there, becoming the franchise leader for NBA wins. He had lead the team to the playoffs the past three seasons, including one trip to the Eastern Conference Finals, and gave them their first division title in 10 years.
Vogel ran out his contract with the Pacers after signing a two-year contract extension in 2014, the same season he coached the Eastern Conference in the All-Star Game.
The new head coach of the Magic, who spent 10 years in the league as an assistant before landing a head coaching job, will look to help a young team continue their development without a hiccup in the process.
