The talks of a possible panic mode have come up regarding the New York Yankees following their four-game series sweep at the hands of the Boston Red Sox this past weekend. That has them a season-high 9.5 games out of first place in the AL East, and just 2.5 games ahead of the Oakland Athletics in the AL Wild Card race. Although, Lance Lynn made his first start with the Yankees and led his new team in a 7-0 shutout of the Chicago White Sox on Monday night.
Lynn pitched in to the eighth inning and struck out nine in his first win with the Yankees and eighth overall. It was not his team debut, as he came out of the bullpen to throw 4.1 scoreless innings of relief last Wednesday. He was on his game on Monday, retiring 19 in a row at one point before Nicky Delmonico broke that streak up with a single in the eighth inning. Lynn would get one out in that inning before getting taken out of the game by manager Aaron Boone.
A.J. Cole came in to get the final five outs for the Yankees, who were coming off a heartbreaking 10-inning loss on Sunday night that saw them blow a three-run lead in the ninth.
Gleyber Torres went deep for the 18th time this season, as the Yankees pulled away with two runs in the fifth and three more in the eighth. They could've had more, but Greg Bird was robbed of what would've been a three-run home run, as Adam Engel brought it back with a sensational leaping catch at the wall..
The White Sox's loss snaps their season-high four-game winning streak as they were shut out for the 10th time this season. Starting pitcher Dylan Covey got off to a nice start by retiring the first 10 batters he faced, but ended up giving up four runs on seven hits over 6.1 innings. He dropped to 4-8 on the season and 1-6 in his past seven starts. The Yankees will stay in Chicago with hopes of getting back on track for good with Game 2 on Tuesday.
