The Oakland Athletics have helped themselves with their torrid stretch throughout this summer, and Monday night they were able to help themselves against the team that is chasing the in the AL Wild Card standings. Jed Lowrie drove in four runs, as the A's gained a game on the Seattle Mariners with a 7-6 win over the M's at Oakland Coliseum. Lowrie's big night supported Sean Manaea, who earned his 11th win of the season.
Manaea pitched 7.2 innings and allowed just two runs while striking out three in the A's 71st victory of the year. This masterful outing helped him overcome a tough showing against the Los Angeles Dodgers, where he lasted just 2.2 innings his last time out.
The A's did have a big lead late, but the Mariners rallied in the eighth inning to make things close. Nelson Cruz and Jean Segura each had RBI singles as the Mariners did not go down quietly. Although, Blake Treinen would shut down the comeback attempt for his 31st save, putting the Athletics now 2.5 games ahead of the M's for the final American League Wild Card spot.
Matt Chapman finished with three doubles, including one of the two-run variety, as that double performance tied a franchise record, which he also set on June 12th against the Houston Astros. The A's have now won four of five overall and move a season-high 23 games over .500.
Marco Gonzales gave up four runs on eight hits in just five innings in his eighth loss of the year. Gonzales' season has taken a turn for the worse, as he now has dropped three in a row after winning five straight from June 29th-July 29th. He struck out four and walked three in Monday's loss. This crucial series will continue with game 2 on Tuesday.
