The Detroit Lions will be down a major veteran presence in their defensive backfield come the 2019 season as safety Glover Quin announced his retirement on Tuesday. The news comes after 10 NFL seasons with the Lions and Houston Texans, as the defensive star revealed the announcement to ESPN via text message. He had spent the past six seasons with the Lions after signing with them in 2013 via free agency, and started his career with four seasons as a member of the Texans.
The 33-year-old played in 159 NFL games, starting 156 of them, including the final 148 of them with Houston and Detroit. He ended up with 737 tackles, 24 interceptions, 85 passes defended, 10 forced fumbles, four sacks, and two defensive touchdowns. His final game came in the Lions' 31-0 loss to the Green Bay Packers last December, and that was when the hints came on that he could be done. He was seen after the game taking pictures with teammates and hanging around a bit longer than usual at the stadium.
Quin took to Instagram to reflect on his career Tuesday, thanking both organizations, as well as everyone that played a role in his professional football career. His past few seasons have been filled with leading the Lions' young defensive assets in developing in to forces on that side of the ball. That includes Darius Slay and Quandre Diggs, who are both set to take over for the Lions this season, in which they both credit Quin in getting them ready to do so.
