Kansas Cruises Past Young, Oklahoma
The Kansas Jayhawks took advantage of a struggling Oklahoma Sooners team on Monday night to improve their case for a higher seed in the NCAA Tournament. Devonte Graham scored 23 points and recorded seven assists as the eighth-ranked Jayhawks cruised to a 104-74 win on their home floor. Kansas was clicking from the beginning, as they got off to a 10-0 start and finished at 60 percent shooting, including 55 percent from three-point range. They finished with six players in double figures and broke the 100-mark for the first time since December. Kansas's big night helped them avenge a loss to Oklahoma on the road in January, as they held Trae Young to a career-low 11 points. Young missed 10 of his 13 shots and finished with nine assists on the night. Kameron McGusty led the Sooners with 22 points, while Jamuni McNeace added 18 in his first career start. The victory was Kansas's 300th in conference play in school history, as the Jayhawks move on to a top-10 showdown with sixth-ranked Texas Tech on Saturday. The Sooners look to snap their six-game skid when they host Kansas State that same night.
Martinez Joins Red Sox as Spring Training Nears
The historically slow off-season is finally coming to an end, as one of the top sluggers found a home on Monday. Outfielder J.D. Martinez agreed to a five-year, $110 million deal with the Boston Red Sox, a contract that includes opt-out clauses after the second and third years. This was reportedly the second round of negotiations between the two sides, as the Red Sox reportedly offered him a similar five-year contract last month. With talks stalling overall, there was speculation that he could return to the Arizona Diamondbacks, but he now adds to a struggling Red Sox lineup that was last in the American League with 168 home runs last season. The 30-year-old is coming off a career-high 45-home run season between the Detroit Tigers and Diamondbacks in 2017. In 62 games in Arizona, he compiled 29 home runs and 65 RBI to lead them to a postseason appearance. This move may be Boston's way of responding to the New York Yankees' addition of Giancarlo Stanton from the Miami Marlins. The AL East was already the juggernaut of Major League Baseball, but they seem to always find a way to add to what they have.
Bruins Inch Closer to Lightning With OT Win
The Boston Bruins have done everything they can to make things interesting with the Tampa Bay Lightning in the Atlantic Division. Monday night's 2-1 overtime victory over the Calgary Flames pulled them within a point of the first-place Lightning. Brad Marchand scored his 22nd goal of the season 3:36 into overtime, helping Boston overcome a tough 6-1 loss to the Vancouver Canucks this past weekend. David Pastrnak also scored for the Bruins, who are 12-1-2 in their last 15 road games. They also have two games in hand on the Lightning, as they have lost in regulation just three times in the past 28 games. The Flames on the other hand, are starting to play themselves out of the playoff race in the West, as they have gone 1-3-4 in their last eight home games. They now sit two points out of third place in the Pacific Division behind the Anaheim Ducks, who shut out the Las Vegas Golden Knights on Monday. Calgary will look to get back on track when they visit the Golden Knights on Wednesday. The Bruins continue their road trip on Tuesday when they take on the Edmonton Oilers.
