The Kansas Jayhawks' football program has struggled to get any type of success, which has led to a change being made for next season. It was announced on Sunday that head coach David Beaty will not return for his fifth season next year. The Jayhawks are 3-6 this season, including 1-5 in Big 12 play, following a 27-3 loss to Iowa State on Saturday. In over three seasons with the team, Beaty is just 6-39 as their head coach, and 2-31 against Big 12 opponents.
In fact, the three wins they have this season is the most they've had since Charlie Weiss' final season in 2014. Athletics director Jeff Long released a statement to announce the move, but did speak highly of Beaty. That included Long stating "I know that Coach Beaty cares deeply about his players, and I respect that." Although, he also mentioned "I believe that new leadership is necessary for our football team to move forward and compete at the highest level of the Big 12 Conference."
Beaty was under contract with the team through the 2021 season, which came from an extension that he signed in 2016. Kansas says that it will fulfill the terms of their contract, which will pay their soon to be former coach the $3 million that he is owed.
Long took to Twitter to announce that he had met with Beaty to personally deliver him the news. He also mentioned that the team will search for an "experienced head coach" to what they call "break the cycle."
