After the Winnipeg Jets signed Dustin Byfuglien to an extension earlier this season, the next step was to figure out what to do with Andrew Ladd. They could sign him and keep him around through the rebuilding process, or trade him away for younger stars, and the decision was made on Thursday.
The Jets sent Ladd back to the Chicago Blackhawks for forward Mark Dano and two draft picks, including a first-rounder in this June's draft. The other conditional pick is a third-round choice in 2018.
Chicago gets the 30-year-old Ladd, along with Jay Harrison and Matt Fraser. Winnipeg will also retain 36 percent of Ladd's remaining cap hit and salary. The pending free agent is now in his second stint with Chicago, being traded there by the Carolina Hurricanes in 2008.
Ladd has two Stanley Cups in his career, including one in Chicago in 2010. Salary cap issues led to to the team trading him away to the Atlanta Thrashers, a franchise that relocated to Winnipeg in 2011.
The 30-year-old also won a Stanley Cup while a part of the Hurricanes in 2006. Ladd will be thrown on the left side of the top line for the Blackhawks, filling a hole caused by the Brandon Saad trade in the off-season.
The now former Jet was selected in the first round of the 2004 draft by Carolina, and now has 202 career goals and 252 assists in 750 NHL games over an 11-year span. His best season came a year ago, where he put up a career-high 62 points, with 24 goals and 38 assists in 81 games.
Chicago finally found the man that will play along with Jonathan Toews on the top line, going to the top of their trade list, as Ladd has been rumored to be heading to the Windy City for weeks. He will now look to help the Blackhawks to their fourth Stanley Cup in the last seven years.
