Adam Gase only went two weeks without a job in the NFL before landing another head coaching gig, which he did on Wednesday. The New York Jets agreed to bring in the former Miami Dolphins head coach in to the same position, while already making plans for his coaching staff. The likes of former Cleveland Browns defensive coordinator Gregg Williams and former Broncos head coach Vance Joseph were discussed as potential defensive coordinators under Gase. Joseph was also in consideration for the Cincinnati Bengals head coaching vacancy, but ended up joining the Arizona Cardinals to run their defense.
Dowell Loggains is expected to join the staff as the top offensive assistant with high hopes of improving rookie quarterback Sam Darnold. The Jets saw potential in Gase to help with their rookie QB, as they reached out to him immediately after he was fired by the Miami Dolphins on December 31st. He was only 23-25 in three seasons with the Dolphins, but did have good success against the Jets, winning five of their past six meetings.
The Jets were focusing in on a coach that has experience working with successful quarterbacks, with the intentions of the same result coming from Darnold. Gase has worked with the likes of Peyton Manning as an offensive coordinator with the Denver Broncos, which resulted in a Super Bowl victory in 2013. Darnold was thrilled with the decision his team made, talking up Gase in a recent interview, saying that he was "the right guy" for the job. Surprisingly enough, Gase is the first Jets head coach with previous head coaching experience since Bill Parcells in 1997.
