Jordan Eberle never really wanted to test the free agent waters this summer, and well before the free agency period began for the NHL, the New York Islanders made sure he didn't have to. The team re-signed Eberle to a five-year contract on Friday, which is worth $27.5 million. The winger is the second Islanders' star to commit long term to the team after John Tavares decided to leave for the Toronto Maple Leafs in free agency last summer. Brock Nelson has also committed long term to New York, this after they were a surprise in the league this past season, making the Stanley Cup Playoffs under first-year head coach Barry Trotz.
Eberle was traded from the Edmonton Oilers to the Islanders in 2017, and since then has recorded 44 goals and 52 assists in 159 games. Before that, he spent seven seasons with the Oilers, with 209 goals and 269 assists, good for 478 points in 666 regular season games.
This contract was signed with high hopes that the team will be contending for the Stanley Cup during the tenure of this deal, as the 29-year-old Eberle kept drawing comparisons to what the St. Louis Blues did this season. Of course, he's talking about St. Louis going from last place on January 2nd to hoisting the cup in Boston after Game 7 Wednesday night. The Islanders' next priorities: Anders Lee and Robin Lehner, who are both scheduled to be unrestricted free agents.
