Ian Kinsler did something that not many baseball players would do, as he announced his retirement this weekend just one hit shy of 2,000 for his career. The second baseman announced the news on Friday, while also stating that he would be joining the San Diego Padres' front office. He ended his career playing with the Padres, but is mostly known for his time with the Texas Rangers and Detroit Tigers. Kinsler also had stints with the Boston Red Sox and Los Angeles Angels in his 14-year major league career, but an injury this past season played a role in his decision to call it a career, as he was sidelined in August with a herniated cervical disk.
The 37-year-old will be an adviser to baseball operations for San Diego, as he still looks to settle the $4.25 million that was left on his contract. Kinsler also finishes with 257 home runs, 909 RBIs, and 243 stolen bases, with his most Postseason success coming with the Tigers.
The four-time All-Star spent eight seasons with the Rangers before getting traded to the Tigers in 2013, and then was traded to the Angels four years later. He was dealt by the Red Sox to the Padres at the 2018 Trade Deadline, before Boston went on to beat the Los Angeles Dodgers in the World Series. He seems content with the decision to retire, as he stated "it's time to do something else."
