The Carolina Hurricanes are continuing to climb in the Metropolitan Division standings year by year, this year in fifth place, seven points behind the Pittsburgh Penguins. A key part of that progress is Teuvo Teravainen, whom they rewarded on Monday afternoon. It was announced that the 'Canes have given Teravainen a five-year, $27 million extension. That keeps the winger under contract with Carolina through the 2023-2024 season.
The 24-year-old will get $5.4 million annually, as this contract prevents him from becoming a restricted free agent come July 1st. He is second on the Hurricanes with 39 points, 29 assists, and 12 power play points this season. In 211 games with Carolina, Teravainen has 145 points, including 48 goals and 97 assists, this after getting traded over from the Chicago Blackhawks on June 15th, 2016.
Teravainen was drafted 18th overall in the 2012 NHL Draft by the Blackhawks, as he went on to play 115 games with Chicago. That includes 25 Stanley Cup Playoff games with them, where he had four goals and seven assists. In 326 games in his career, he has put together 65 goals and 124 assists at the NHL level. The young player was thrilled with the new contract, stating "I love this team, I love my teammates here , and all the organization." He also gave the Hurricanes' faithful some hope to look forward to when he said "I feel like we're going in the right direction."
